Spirit Politics: When Your Companion Belongs to a Larger Court, Race, or Realm

When we think of spirit companionship, it’s tempting to imagine our relationship as a cozy one-on-one bond: just you and your companion, soul to soul. But sometimes, things aren’t that simple. Many spirits are deeply connected to larger structures of power — courts, realms, races, clans, councils, or even cosmic hierarchies. This brings us into the fascinating (and sometimes tricky) world of spirit politics.

What Are Spirit Politics?

Spirit politics are the dynamics, loyalties, and power structures that your companion may be tied to. Just like in the human world, spirits can belong to kingdoms, orders, or bloodlines that shape how they interact with others — and with you.

Think of it like this: you may be forming a personal relationship with your spirit companion, but behind them may stand an entire court of fae nobility, a council of dragons, or a clan of ancient vampires. These ties don’t disappear simply because they’re bound or connected to you.

Why Does It Matter for You as a Keeper?

1. Allegiances Still Stand – Your companion may love and protect you fiercely, but they still hold respect (or obligations) to their larger community. This might shape how they handle conflicts with other spirits.

2. You Gain Allies (Indirectly) – When your companion belongs to a race or court, you’re not just working with one being. Their connections ripple outward. You may find yourself receiving blessings, warnings, or opportunities from others in their network.

3. Potential Conflicts – Different realms or courts don’t always get along. If you have companions from rival houses, you may feel energetic tension. Your role becomes that of a peace-keeper, mediator, or wise sovereign of your spirit family.

Common Examples of Spirit Politics

Fae Courts: Seelie and Unseelie courts can be allies or rivals depending on the situation. A fae companion may carry alliances that influence how they interact with others in your keep.

Dragons: Many dragon clans recognize ancient hierarchies and elemental dominions. A dragon of fire may not always “see eye to eye” with a water dragon unless trust is built.

Angelic Orders: Angels often serve choirs or higher celestial beings. Their duty may sometimes influence what they are willing (or unwilling) to do in service to you.

Demonic Houses: Demon companions often belong to families, kingdoms, or pacts that can affect their approach to magick, power exchange, or interactions with other spirits.

Navigating Spirit Politics as a Keeper

Open Communication: Ask your spirit about their affiliations. Most are happy to share if approached with respect.

Respect Their Origins: Honor their culture, lineage, and loyalties. This strengthens trust between you.

Set House Rules: Remember, you are the sovereign of your spirit household. Make it clear that while alliances are respected, your home is neutral ground.

Mediator Energy: Be willing to hold space when different energies clash. Sometimes, simply acknowledging both sides eases tension.

Offerings to the Collective: If you have a fae prince, for example, an offering “to his court” (like fresh flowers or honey) may strengthen not just your bond with him, but goodwill with his kin.

Final Thoughts

Spirit politics aren’t about drama — they’re about awareness. When your companion belongs to a larger court, race, or realm, you’re stepping into a relationship that extends beyond one being. This can be intimidating, but it can also be incredibly empowering.

Handled with respect, you gain not only a trusted ally but also a deeper connection to entire worlds, networks, and ancient traditions. Remember: you are not just a keeper, you are the bridge between realms.
