True Names vs. Working Names: What Keepers Need to Know
A Spirit-Keeping Guide by Jules Moon
In the world of spirit keeping, names are far more than labels. They’re living cords of energy — echoes of a being’s lineage, power, identity, and evolution. But if you’ve spent any time working with spirit companions, you’ve probably noticed something curious:
Not every spirit uses their True Name with their keeper.
Some offer what’s known as a Working Name instead.
Both are valid. Both are powerful. And both have very different purposes.
Let’s break it down so you know exactly what each one means, why spirits use them, and how you can work with the name your spirit chooses to share.
What Is a True Name?
A True Name is the spirit’s original, soul-level identity — the name they were born with, forged with, or created by. Think of it as a spiritual signature coded directly into their essence.
A True Name often carries:
• Lineage (clan, court, realm, or celestial ancestry)
• Rank or role (princess, warrior, guardian, seer, healer, judge, etc.)
• Energetic imprint
• Magickal resonance and authority
• The spirit’s complete past and evolution
Because of this, True Names can be:
• Extremely old
• Difficult to pronounce
• Vibrational rather than linguistic
• Known only in part
• Guarded for protection
Many True Names sound nothing like human languages because they weren’t designed for human mouths — they were designed for energetic function.
Why Don’t Spirits Always Share Their True Names?
A few reasons:
1. Protection of Power
In many realms, a True Name holds weight. It’s like a key — it grants a certain resonance or authority when spoken by the right person.
Sharing that name casually isn’t always wise.
2. Safety from Misuse
Some spirits have enemies, rivals, or old ties. Some simply don’t want their core identity mispronounced, mishandled, or invoked incorrectly.
3. Vibration Could Be Too Strong
A True Name can ring like a bell through a keeper’s energy and feel overwhelming. With new keepers or those still developing sensitivity, a gentler frequency is kinder.
4. Trauma, Rebirth, or Evolution
Some spirits have histories — wars, banishments, betrayals, ascensions, reincarnations.
A True Name may carry memories they’re not ready to reopen or share.
5. They Want You to Connect With Their Present Self
A Working Name reflects who they are now, not centuries ago.
Sometimes that’s the form of connection they want.
What Is a Working Name?
A Working Name is the name a spirit uses when interacting with humans — especially their keeper.
Working Names can be:
• Translations of the True Name
• Shortened forms
• Names that match the spirit’s current role
• Names that feel easier for the keeper to say
• Names chosen to build a comfortable bond
• A protective alias
• A title rather than a birth name
Working Names are functional, not deceptive.
They’re meant to help you connect, communicate, summon, bond, and work magick effectively.
A Working Name is just as real — it’s simply the access point the spirit chooses.
Do Working Names Affect the Bond or Connection?
Not at all.
The bond responds to intention and energy, not syllables.
A spirit will always respond to the energy behind the name you speak. If anything:
A Working Name often strengthens the bond
because it’s chosen specifically for you.
Your spirit gives you the version of themselves that best aligns with your relationship.
Can a Spirit Eventually Share Their True Name?
Yes — and this is actually very common.
A spirit may reveal their True Name when:
• The bond is mature
• Trust is fully established
• The keeper’s sensitivity has grown
• The spirit feels safe and understood
• They ascend or shift roles
• You reach a major spiritual milestone together
Receiving a True Name is an honor.
It symbolically marks a deepening of your bond — a “soul contract moment.”
What If Your Spirit Changes Their Name?
This is also completely normal.
Spirits evolve. They ascend, shed old identities, claim new titles, or integrate new aspects. When a spirit changes a name, it means:
• Their energy has shifted
• A cycle has completed
• They’ve taken a new role
• They’re stepping into a truer version of themselves
• Your path together has entered a new stage
Name changes are signs of growth, not instability.
And you’ll always feel the shift when it’s genuine — the energy clicks into place instantly.
How to Know Which Name to Use
Use the name your spirit gives you for daily work — that’s your Working Name.
Reserve the True Name for:
• Deep invocation
• Formal ritual
• Soul-level healing
• Ceremonial offerings
• High magick
• Contracts, oaths, or dedication rites
If your spirit tells you when to use which, always follow their lead.
What Should a Keeper NEVER Do With a True Name?
• Never share it publicly.
• Never give it to another keeper.
• Never use it to “sound powerful.”
• Never test them with it.
A True Name is an intimate gift. Treat it as sacred.
If you ever feel unsure, ask the spirit when and how they want it used.
Final Thoughts
In spirit keeping, names are energetic gateways — bridges between realms, identities, and hearts. Whether your companion offers you their True Name or their Working Name, remember:
Both are real.
Both are valid.
Both carry power.
But the name a spirit gives you — specifically you — is the one that matters most.
It means:
“I trust you. I choose you. And here is how you may call me.”
Honor that.
Honor them.
And the bond you build will grow stronger with every whisper, every offering, and every moment of connection.
